Перед кожним загальним iменником повинен стояти артикль.



Артикль не вживаеться, якщо перед iменником стоiть:

– присвiйний займенник my, your, his, her, its, our, their, mine, yours, hers, ours, theirs

My (немае артикля) friend is very good. – Мiй друг дуже хороший.

– вказiвний займенник this, these, that, those, it, such, the same

That (немае артикля) boy is her brother. – Той хлопчик – ii брат.

– iншiй iменник в присвiйному вiдмiнку

Her brother’s (немае артикля) name is Nick. – Iм’я ii брата – Нiк.

– кiлькiсний числiвник

They have got two (немае артикля) children. – У них двое дiтей.

– заперечення no (не not!)

I have no (немае артикля) pet. – У менe не мае домашньоi тварини.

I am not a doctor. – Я не лiкар.



Згадуючи предмет вперше, ми вживаемо перед ним неозначений артикль a (an), який може вживатися тiльки з обчислювальними iменниками, що стоять в однинi. Перед необчислювальними iменниками або iменниками в множинi неозначений артикль опускаеться.

Артикль a ставиться перед iменниками, якi починаються з голосного звуку, артикль an ставиться перед iменниками, якi починаються з приголосного звука.



Нижче наведенi необчислювальнi iменники, подiленi на кiлька смислових груп:

iжа: meat, salt, bread, chocolate, soup;

рiдини: tea, coffee, lemonade, petrol, oil, shampoo;

матерiали i речовини: gold, wood, sand, paper, coal;

абстрактнi поняття: happiness, love, friendship, beauty;

предмети вивчення i мови: chemistry, literature, Spanish;

хвороби: flu, mumps, measles;

iнше: money, furniture, weather.



Згадуючи цей же предмет вдруге, ми ставимо перед ним означений артикль the, який вживаеться як з обчислювальними, так i з необчислювальними iменниками, як в однинi, так i в множинi.

This is a book. The book is interesting. (book – обчислювальний iменник в однинi)

This is (немае артикля) meat. The meat is fresh. (meat – необчислювальний iменник)

These are (немае артикля) books. The books are good. (books – обчислювальний iменник в множинi)

Якщо перед iменником вживаеться прикметник, то вiн стоiть мiж неозначеним артиклем i iменником.

Навiть згадуючи предмет вперше, ми, тим не менш, вживаемо перед ним означений артикль:

а) якщо згаданий предмет е единим в свiтi:

The sun is shining brightly.

б) якщо цей предмет е певним по ситуацii:

Перед назвами театрiв, музеiв, картинних галерей, кiнотеатрiв та готелiв зазвичай вживаеться означений артикль.
