Madame: Thats my boy! (14) (To Stanton:) You see? He understands every word. He is quite an intelligent little dog. (15) He is also the reason I asked you to come, Albert. I would like to make my will. (16) As you know, I have no living relatives. I want to leave everything I have to Bijou. Im very worried for him. He is an orphan, and Im afraid that when I die, he may land in a dog shelter. (17)
Stanton: My dear Madeleine
Madame: Please, dont interrupt me, Albert. I know what youre going to say. You will say that it is too early for me to think about death, that I will live to be a hundred. The butler, who had been listening all this time behind the door, tiptoed to his room.
Butler: Wake up, Napoleon, you lazybones. Weve got work to do. (34)
Napoleon: Miaow?
Butler: What kind of work? Nothing out of the ordinary. (35) Were going to fool one very nasty old man before he gets too nasty. (36) Madame wants him to hear the great maestro play, and a womans wish is my command. (37) Where is that tape recorder?
Napoleon: Mew.
Butler: Ah, thank you. Now listen, Napoleon. Listen carefully. I will go out onto the balcony and pretend to be playing. If you see someone enter the room, just press the stop button. Do you understand?
Napoleon: Mew.
Butler: Good. You are a smart cat. The smartest of them all.
Napoleon: Mew.
The butler pressed the play button on the tape recorder, and the sounds of beautiful violin music filled the room.

Madame: I know that he has no family, no wife, no children. He is all alone in the whole world. His cat, Napoleon, is his only companion. He must feel very lonely.
Stanton: So lonely that you felt pity for him and gave him a job in your house? And now youre going to include him in your will.
Madame: Hush! Listen! Thats him! (40)
Madame rose from her chair and went towards the balcony, beckoning to her guest to follow her.
Madame: See for yourself. Just dont go out. If he sees you, he will stop playing.
Stanton stuck out his head and saw the butler playing.
Stanton (unable to hide his surprise): Fabulous! Just fabulous!
