The Pen /

For two days ( ) Itoiled ( ) inthe prison-yard ( ). It was ( ) heavy work ( ), and (), inspite ofthe fact ( ) that () Imalingered ( ) at every opportunity ( ), Iwas ( ) played out ( ). This was ( ) because of(-) the food (). No man () could work hard ( ) on such food ( ). Bread and water ( ), that was all ( ) that () was given us ( ).

Once aweek ( ) we were supposed toget ( ) meat (); but () this meat ( ) did not always go around ( ), and since (, , ) all nutriment had first been boiled out ofit ( ) inthe making ofsoup ( ), it didnt matter ( ) whether one got ataste ofit ( ) once aweek ( ) or not ( ).

Furthermore ( ), there was one vital defect ( ) inthe bread-and-water diet (- ). While (, ) we got plenty ofwater ( ), we did not get enough ( ) ofthe bread (). Aration () ofbread () was about the size ofones two fists ( ), and three rations ( ) aday () were given () toeach prisoner ( ).

There was () one good thing (- ), Imust say ( ), about the water () it was hot ( ). Inthe morning () it was called ( ) coffee, at noon () it was dignified as ( ) soup (), and at night () it masqueraded as ( ) tea (). But ( ) it was the same old ( ) water () all the time ( ). The prisoners () called it ( ) water bewitched. ( )

Inthe morning () it was ( ) black water ( ), the color being due ( , ) toboiling it ( ) with burnt bread-crusts ( ). At noon () it was served ( ) minus the color (), with salt () and adrop ofgrease added ( ). At night () it was served ( ) with apurplish-auburn hue (- ) that defied all speculation ( ); it was darn ( ) poor tea ( ), but it was ( ) dandy () hot water ( ).

We were ( ) ahungry lot ( ) inthe Erie County Pen ( ). Only the long-timers ( ) knew () what it was ( ) tohave enough toeat ( ). The reason for this was ( ) that () they would have died after atime ( ) on the fare ( ) we short-timers received ( , ).

Iknow ( ) that () the long-timers () got more substantial ( ) grub (), because ( ) there was awhole row ofthem ( ) on the ground floor ( ) inour hall ( ), and when (, ) Iwas atrusty ( ), Iused to( ) steal from their grub ( ) while serving them ( ). Man cannot live ( ) on bread alone ( ) and not enough ofit (, , ).

My pal ( ) delivered the goods ( ). After two days ( ) ofwork () inthe yard () Iwas taken out ofmy cell ( ) and made atrusty ( ), ahall-man (). At morning and night ( ) we served ( ) the bread () tothe prisoners () intheir cells (); but () at twelve oclock (12) adifferent method was used ( ). The convicts () marched infrom work (, ) inalong line ( ).

As () they entered the door ( ) ofour hall ( ), they broke the lock-step ( ) and took their hands down ( ) from the shoulders () oftheir line-mates (). Just () inside the door () were piled () trays () ofbread (), and here () also stood () the First Hall-man ( ) and two ordinary ( ) hall-men ().

Iwas one ( ) ofthe two ( ). Our task was ( ) tohold () the trays ofbread ( ) as () the line ofconvicts filed past ( ). As soon as the tray, say ( , ), that Iwas holding ( ) was emptied (), the other hall-man ( ) took my place ( ) with afull tray ( ). And when () his was emptied ( ), Itook his place ( ) with afull tray ( ). Thus ( ) the line tramped steadily by(, , ), each man () reaching with his right hand ( ) and taking one ration ( ) ofbread () from the extended tray ( ).

The task () ofthe First Hall-man ( ) was different ( ). He used ( ) aclub (). He stood beside ( ) the tray ( ) and watched (). The hungry wretches ( ) could never get over the delusion that ( , ) sometime () they could manage ( ) toget two rations ofbread out ofthe tray ( ). But () inmy experience ( ) that sometime ( ) never came ( ). The club () ofthe First Hall-man ( ) had away offlashing out ( ) quick () as the stroke ofatigers claw ( ) tothe hand () that dared ambitiously ( ).

The First Hall-man was ( ) agood judge ofdistance ( ), and he had smashed ( ) so many hands ( ) with that club ( ) that he had become ( ) infallible ( ). He never missed ( ), and he usually punished ( ) the offending convict ( ) bytaking his one ration away from him ( ) and sending him tohis cell ( ) tomake his meal off () ofhot water ( ).

And at times, while () all these men ( ) lay hungry ( ) intheir cells ( ), Ihave seen ( ) ahundred or so extra ( -) rations () ofbread () hidden away () inthe cells () ofthe hall-men (). It would seem absurd ( ), our retaining this bread (, ). But it was one ( ) ofour grafts ( ).

We were ( ) economic masters ( ) inside our hall ( ), turning the trick ( ) inways quite similar ( ) tothe economic masters ofcivilization ( ). We controlled ( ) the food-supplyofthe population ( ), and, just like ( , ) our brother bandits ( -) outside (), we made the people ( ) pay through the nose for it ( ). We peddled the bread ( ).

Once aweek ( ), the men () who worked ( ) inthe yard () received afive-cent plug ( ) ofchewing tobacco ( ). This chewing tobacco ( ) was the coin ( ) ofthe realm ( ). Two or three rations (- ) ofbread () for aplug was the way we exchanged ( ), and they traded ( ), not because ( ) they loved tobacco less ( ), but because ( ) they loved bread more ( ).

Oh, Iknow (, , ), it was like ( , ) taking candy ( ) from ababy (), but what would you ( )? We had tolive ( ). And certainly () there should be some reward for initiative and enterprise ( ).

Besides ( ), we but patterned ourselves after ( - ) our betters ( ) outside the walls (), who (), on alarger scale ( ), and under the respectable disguise ( ) ofmerchants (), bankers (), and captains ofindustry ( ), did precisely ( ) what we were doing ( ). What awful things ( ) would have happened ( ) tothose poor wretches ( ) if it hadnt been for us ( ),

Icant imagine ( ). Heaven knows ( ) we put bread ( ) into circulation () inthe Erie County Pen ( ). Ay (), and we encouraged ( ) frugality and thrift ( ) inthe poor devils ( ) who forewent their tobacco ( ). And then () therewas our example ( ). Inthe breast () ofevery convict ( ) there we implanted the ambition ( ) tobecome even as we ( ) and run agraft ( ). Saviours ofsociety ( ) Iguess yes (, ).

Here was () ahungry man ( ) without any tobacco ( ). Maybe () he was aprofligate ( , ) and had used it all up on himself ( ). Very good ( ); he had ( ) apair ofsuspenders ( ). Iexchanged ( ) half adozen rations ofbread for it ( ) or () adozen rations ( ) if the suspenders ( ) were very good ( ).

Now Inever ( ) wore suspenders ( ), but () that didnt matter ( ). Around the corner () lodged along-timer ( ), doing ten years ( 10) for manslaughter ( ). He wore suspenders ( ), and he wanted apair ( ).

Icould trade them ( ) tohim () for some ofhis meat ( ). Meat was ( ) what Iwanted ( , ). Or perhaps (, ) he had atattered ( ), paper-covered novel ( ). That was treasure-trove ( ). Icould read it ( ) and then () trade it off () tothe bakers () for cake (), or tothe cooks ( ) for meat and vegetables ( ), or tothe firemen ( )

for decent coffee ( ), or tosome one or other ( - ) for the newspaper () that occasionally filtered in( ), heaven alone knows how ( ). The cooks (), bakers (), and firemen () were prisoners ( ) like myself ( ), and they lodged ( ) inour hall ( ) inthe first row ( ) ofcells () over us ( ).

Inshort ( ), afull-grown system ( ) ofbarter () obtained inthe Erie County Pen ( ). There was even moneyincirculation ( ). This money ( ) was sometimes ( ) smuggled inbythe short-timers ( ), more frequently () came from the barber-shop graft ( , ), where ( , ) the newcomers were mulcted ( ), but most ofall ( ) flowed from the cells ( ) ofthe long-timers () though () how they got it Idont know ( , ).

What ( ) ofhis preeminent position ( ), the First Hall-man was reputed (, ) tobe quite wealthy ( ). Inaddition to() his miscellaneous grafts ( ), he grafted on us ( ). We farmed ( ) the general wretchedness ( ), and the First Hall-man ( ) was Farmer-General over all ofus ( ).

We held our particular grafts ( ) byhis permission ( ), and we had to( ) pay for that permission ( ). As Isay ( , ), he was reputed tobe wealthy ( ); but () we never saw ( ) his money ( ), and he lived inacell ( ) all tohimself ( ) insolitary grandeur ( ).

But () that money ( ) was made inthe Pen ( ) Ihad direct evidence ( ), for ( ) Iwas cell-mate quite atime (- ) with the Third Hall-man ( ). He had over ( ) sixteen dollars (16). He used tocount ( ) his money ( ) every night ( ) after nine oclock ( ), when () we were locked in( ). Also (), he used totell me ( ) each night ( ) what he would do tome ( ) if ( ) Igave away on him ( ) tothe other hall-men ( ). You see (), he was afraid of( , ) being robbed ( ), and danger ( ) threatened him ( ) from three different directions ( ).

There were the guards ( ). Acouple ofthem ( ) might jump upon him ( ), give him agood beating ( ) for alleged insubordination ( ), and throw him ( ) into the solitaire (⠫) (the dungeon (); and inthe mix-up that ( ) sixteen dollars ofhis ( 16) would take wings ( ).

Then again ( ), the First Hall-man ( ) could have taken it all away from him ( ) bythreatening todismiss him ( ) and fire him back ( ) tohard labor ( ) inthe prison-yard ( ). And yet again (), there were the ten ofus ( 10) who were ordinary hall-men ( ).

If we got an inkling ofhis wealth ( ), there was alarge liability ( ), some quiet day ( ), ofthe whole bunch ofus ( ) getting him into acorner ( ) and dragging him down (). Oh (), we were wolves ( ), believe me ( ) just like (-- ) the fellows ( ) who () do business ( ) inWall Street (-).

He had good reason ( ) tobe afraid ofus ( ), and so had I( ) tobe afraid ofhim ( ). He was ahuge ( ), illiterate brute ( ), an ex-Chesapeake-Bay-oyster-pirate ( ), an ex-con () who had done five years inSing Sing ( 5 ), and ageneral all-around ( ) stupidly () carnivorous beast ( ). He used totrap sparrows
