PREFACE
These collected quotations contain quotes from interviews and speeches ofthe President ofthe Russian Federation at conferences and meetings between 2000and 2017.
They represent avivid example ofnon-standard situations, inwhich interpreters usually have tosolve complex problems ofselecting idiomatic, metaphorical and slang expressions, generalising the idea and common sense. They then have toreplace phrases incomprehensible toforeign audiences and their cultural environment, bythose, which best convey the real meaning ofliving speech everyday speech. The work ofan interpreter often remains behind the scenes. Preparation for consecutive and simultaneous interpretation always begins long before the event begins.
However, if the situation does not develop as planned, then the use oflexicon goes beyond the presumed preliminary templates. We remember with gratitude those scholars who helped us tomaster our specialty. They openly shared their experiences, telling cases from their own practice, citing examples written innotebooks, on scraps ofnewspapers and, more often, on packs ofcigarettes, laughing at the curious, unexpected translations they had made during negotiations ofdifferent levels. They did not hesitate totalk about the mistakes that had been made at the very beginning oftheir work and even inthe mature years. The peculiarities ofcultural development and the use ofidioms as well as stable expressions stand intranslation practice, perhaps inthe second place after the ability togeneralise.
