Dedication

When I discovered Santa Muerte (the Holy Death) I was in a difficult moment, I had doubts and a lack of faith. This book is the result of rediscovering myself and seeing the great treasure I have with my friends, who encouraged me to write about Santa Muerte so that people could know her in depth.

I would especially like to thank those who have translated the book so it could be read in other languages.

Also, to my family, which are those who I love and I have chosen to be in my life, those who support me and make me laugh and live, thank you all.

Maga Beth

Introduction

What is Santa Muerte (the Holy Death)? Why are we afraid of her? Santa Muerte is the practice of a religion that originates in Mexico in which the dead are worshipped. This practice has spread to other parts of the world. It is another way of understanding faith and religion. Unknown to many and feared by others, many lies have been said about Santa Muerte and her cult. It is an ancient religion which has been passed down from parents to children.

This book aims to inform about Santa Muerte so that we lose our fear, we understand her, and we know her: the great secret and misunderstanding. We only cease fearing something when it is no longer unknown. Maga Beth with her vast experience in the esoteric world, in different religions and also in Santa Muerte, explains the cult in detail so that the reader gets to know it and demystifies all the dark and negative things that have been unfairly said about it; since every day Santa Muerte has more followers.

This work is a guide that can be used by anyone who wants to make a request, a ritual, or say a prayer, a novena prayer, for love, health, work, money, economy, family, protection, etc. As the reader will see, the ingredients recommended are simple and can be easily found in any part of the world; but, the author also provides a very simple and easy guide on how to make the ingredients that cannot be found yourself. Apart from the history and cult of Santa Muerte, this book also includes an extensive and specific compilation for every topic you may need: love, money, work, health, family, protection, etc. providing the reader with a lot of rituals, works, prayers, novena prayers, etc. for each topic.

This is another book by Maga Beth, unpublished in its sector, that will certainly leave no one indifferent.

Chapter 1 History

The devotion and cult to La Santa Muerte (the Holy Death) is very ancient and her image has become very familiar in Mexico (where it originates) and in other countries. Many countries are debating the origin of this cult, from Mexico to Cuba, and also some African spiritualist temples (because in Africa there is a very similar, revered image called Oya). However, the truth is that nobody really knows where the belief comes from.

The Holy Death can be found on altars in the street, in shops (sometimes as merchandise, sometimes as a testimony of the traders faith), and in houses; along with images of other Catholic saints such as the Virgin of Guadalupe and others, which until recently were the only public manifestations of Mexican popular religiosity.

Birth and death are part of the human life cycle. We are not aware of our birth because we are babies, but the reality of adulthood makes the awareness of death a priority.

In the 1960s, the Holy Death became very popular after a villager saw her image drawn on the walls of his wooden hut at a place in Catemaco (Veracruz). He asked the priest of the village to verify the image and canonize it, but he refused. Then, the villagers decided to spread the apparition of the Holy Death from person to person, without having a place to venerate her.

In Mexico, the Aztec civilisation recognised the human life cycle which was represented by two deities: Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacihuatl, the Lord and the Lady of Mictlan, the place where common dead went after a long and difficult journey. The temple was located in the ceremonial centre of the ancient city of Mexico-Tenochtitlan. Its name was Tlalxico, which means navel of the earth.

To appear before the Lord and the Lady of Death, the dead had to overcome many obstacles such as: move away from colliding rocks, cross deserts and hills, suffer threats in the form of a crocodile named Xochitonal, winds with sharp obsidian stones, a mighty river difficult to cross and ask for the help of a dog which would be sacrificed the same day of the persons funeral (Xoloitzcuintli).

Some of these pre-Hispanic beliefs are still latent in Mexican popular culture, such as November 2nd or the Day of the Dead, when they celebrate the day of their deceased ancestors. The idea is to remember the dead with joy, just as they lived in life, and not with the sadness and grief of their death; it is very popular to bring music to funerals to dance and brighten the departure of the dead. Death is seen as a suffering being with a very painful job, which was given a great power but also a great burden that nobody sees.

Mexicans also had other representations of death; such as tzompantli or skull rack, rows of wooden poles used to display human skulls, as in the abacuses. These skull racks were found in the great temples of Ancient Mexico and were considered an important part of the cult of death. Death could also be represented by skull figures carved in stone, in clay, or skulls beautifully painted. Human skulls decorated with flints and shells instead of eyes have also been found. The experts have not agreed on the meaning of these skulls, but they assume they were some sort of offering to the lords of death. Traces of stark death, ornso be its of the Goddess Coatlicue, offerings in ritual incense burners, and figures of all types and sizes have also been found.

This indicates that there was a very strong cult towards death among the ancient Mexicans, and also among the Mayans, the Tarascans and the Totonacs, who also had a great devotion to death.

Then, the Spanish arrived and it was thought that the cult to death would be forgotten, but that was not the case: Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacihuatl (mainly the latter) remained hidden and many of their devotees continued following them.

In his study on the Holy Death, the archaeologist Carlos Navarrete suggests that the popular devotion could be due to the syncretism between a Christian deity related to death and Saint Pascual Baylon, a Catholic saint and the Animas Solas (Lonely Souls).

The Spanish Conquest was imposed by blood and fire on the indigenous people of Mexico, but there were also another conquest: the spiritual one, which was the total destruction of the divinities that made up the indigenous culture. However, despite all their efforts, some traces of the ancient religion still remained within Catholicism and the cult to the Holy Death is part of that distant past.

The conversion of the indigenous peoples was paramount for the Franciscan missionaries, and the resistance of the natives towards the new religious doctrines was a permanent condemnation for evangelisers. The malpractice of some indigenous people was denounced in a text written in c. 1600 which mainly described the idolatries in the small village of Tuxtla.

The only true God for Catholics was the one that was established in the Bible. Therefore, when they found another religious thought, they condemned it as if it was a satanic rite: but this was unfair since in Ancient Mexico the concept of hell was not known. The indigenous gods were venerated in pyramids, in hills and in caves, and during the first years of evangelisation the Catholic missionaries did not understand why people used to dance around bones (which had often belonged to high priests or leaders, and that was why they worshipped them). These were only some of the religious practices of the time, which were beyond the comprehension of the minds of conquerors and evangelisers.

To try to hide these practices, the faithful devotees of Mictlancihuatl most probably dressed the cult of this goddess with elements of Catholicism to avoid being punished. The mixture of both roots -Indigenous and European- and the addition of Creole elements gave rise to the cult of the Holy Death, as we know it today.

The current and contemporary cult of the Sant?sima Muerte (Most Holy Death) appeared in Hidalgo around 1965. And it is rooted in the states of Mexico, Guerrero, Veracruz, Tamaulipas, Campeche, Morelos and Distrito Federal (in the barrio de Tepito the cult is commonly used among criminals and merchants), Nuevo Leon, Chihuahua, Quintana Roo, Oaxaca, Tijuana and Guanajuato. It was integrated with the cult to Tonantzin (female deity for the natives and later syncretised in the Virgin of Guadalupe) and that of the Virgin Mary.

The Holy Death is a spiritual entity, an image, a soul that helps and protects anyone who comes to her to ask for favours. She does not work under any kind of magic, neither white nor black. It has sometimes been said that the Holy Death is sinister, painful, cruel and cold, but this is not the case.

Devotees to the Holy Death report that among other favours, she can grant miracles to those who venerate her. Her worship has also been associated with criminals, prostitutes and drug dealers. People living in modern cities and villages also invoke her protection. However, people who live in situations of high risk are usually the ones who venerate her the most, wearing medals or images of the Holy Death or even a tattoo in their skin. Her image can be found mainly in soldiers, policemen, drug dealers, criminals and prostitutes. The Most Holy Death is a symbol that represents people living between the legal and the illegal, but her cult can also be found in the highest strata of society.

People ask her for anything: health, love, good luck, to recover stolen objects or even kidnapped relatives, for business, to open new roads, to win trials, to ward off bad neighbours, to protect vehicles from accidents and thefts, to have more money, to recover debts that people owe us, to find work, to bring food into the home, to ward off harmful friends from your partner or loved ones, to increase love in our partner, to forget a love, to regain a love lost, for matrimonial attraction, to ward off the lover of your partner, to make it up with your partner, for abundance, etc. Several rituals and special prayers are used to approach the Holy Death and gain her favours.

It is said that when the Holy Death grants a favour, one of our relatives must pay for it. This is absolutely false, since she protects the family from illnesses caused by works of black magic, witchcraft or natural disease. It is also said that she punishes you if you do not give her penances. This is totally false too, since she works to help her devotees and not to punish them. We must ask her with faith and kindness, with all our heart and without trying to hurt anyone: respect, faith and devotion from the heart for the Most Holy Death. No matter how difficult a problem may be, the Holy Death will help us without asking for anything in return, but if you offer her something you must give it to her wholeheartedly.

Every day the Holy Death has more devotees and the jealous Church does not see this with good eyes.

It is important to know that by asking the Holy Death, you unleash great forces which magnitude and power must always be handled with a lot of respect and faith. A misuse of everything revealed in this book, is the responsibility only of those who misuse them. If you decide to use them for the dark side, sooner or later they will revert to you for evil, making you guilty for yourself.

Normally, the images of the Holy Death and her cult in general are treated with sincerity and for offering company, something very different from the usual fear of religious rituals. The thing is to treat the image as a member of your family and to appear before it without fearing or disrespecting her.

It is said that once, a sanctuary where the Most Holy Death was being worshiped disappeared because it was annoying some people. To avoid this, believers have different options: hide her image, or replace it with a white rose.

As a curiosity, there is the famous image of Jose Guadalupe Posadas called La Catrina that is currently in prints, small paper cards, chains, rings, medals and figures of bulk of different shades and sizes.

There is a legend that emerges from her, in a place called San Pantalen. In this place hundreds of people professed their faith in this image, which apparently had been destroyed in a fire ironically caused by a candle that one of the worshippers lit for the image. In that same town, another loyal devotee made a new image using a wooden log and placed it near the temple where people worshipped the image and showed their devotion every July 27. The inhabitants of the town carried small figures of the Holy Death round their necks, and worshipped the image with absolute faith in their houses. The miners entrusted themselves to the Holy Death before going down to the mines, so that day after day she would bring them back to their houses and there would be no tragedies. Every day she had more devotees because the peoples petitions were heard. After some time, the production of minerals stopped and the people left the town. Nothing was ever heard about the image they worshipped.

During my visit to Mexico I heard about a person with great devotion: Mrs. Enriqueta Romero Romero. Everything people explained me about this woman (although I could not meet her personally) was kindness and love. She was the founder of the first shrine to the Holy Death, and she assures that her worship is not related to any kind of witchcraft, sorcery or Satanism. On her altar people only pray, ask and make offerings to La Sant?sima (the Most Holy).

Her parishioners are Catholic and in their demands and prayers God, Christ and the Virgin of Guadalupe are always invoked, because the Most Holy is no stranger to the Christian religion, although the Catholic Church does not recognise her cult. The shrine of the Holy Death is placed in front of her house, surrounded by floral and fruits offerings (mainly apples, which symbolize abundance), votive offerings, candles, toys, notes, coins, sweets, cigarettes, cigars, alcoholic beverages in glasses and bottles.

In this place, the sculpture of the Most Holy -also called Se?ora de las Sombras (Lady of the Shadows), Se?ora Blanca (White Lady), Se?ora Negra (Black Lady), Ni?a Santa (Holy Nina), La Parca, La Flaca (The Skinny) is two metres high. Her traditional figure is the skeleton of the Day of the Dead, but dressed as a virgin and saint with different coloured costumes, each of which has a special meaning. Bracelets of pearls, gold and silver with embedded gemstones hang from her neck, clothes, scythe, scale, metal arms and phalanges. These are offerings and gifts of those who thank her for some miracle or favour.

For over 40 years, the Romero family has been worshipping the Most Holy and they state that she does not care about the social or work background of her worshippers. People of different social conditions, as well as children, old people and women of the streets go to Alfareria Street, number 12.

Her worshippers change the clothes of the Holy Death every first Monday of the month; the colour is in accordance with the season and with the demands of her devotees. Red symbolizes love and passion; green, hope; white and blue, peace and pureness -the colours of the virgin Mary- because she usually wears these colours.

The feast of the Holy Death is on November 2, the Day of the Dead and the night before, on October 31, the devotees pray a rosary to dress her in white as a bride. Nocturnal rosaries take place on this day and on Mondays of every month to bless the images carried by her devotees. The people who visit her altar feel the same devotion as they do before Christ, the saints and the virgins; they cross themselves, they pray, they ask and they make offerings. The number of followers grows day by day; when the rosaries are prayed, the streets close to Alfareria Street are closed.

Sellers of all types gather around the ceremony: soft drinks, flowers, candles, figures of the Most Holy, clothes, leaflets with engravings and specific prayers for the rosary, and cigars, which apparently are what the Nina Blanca prefers.

Leonor Paredes, the aunt of Mrs. Romero, instilled this cult and began to practice it in 1962; however, evidence suggests that the devotion to the Holy Death probably dates from the 19

century, when shamans in Catemaco also paid homage to her for a long time.

Amongst the most frequent prayer requests made to the Holy Death is that of keeping the fidelity of the couple. There is a legend saying that the Holy Death was a woman who lived in Pre-Hispanic times and was deceived by her husband. The pain she felt when she saw her husband in the arms of another woman was such that she committed suicide. When God saw her suffering, he made her the patron saint of marriages. This is why she is now the protector of marital union, and she can do a lot of harm to an unfaithful husband, if his wife asks for it. For these same reasons, people ask the Holy Death for help so that one person feels attraction to another and they get married.

As the Se?ora de la Noche (Lady of the Night), she has a special preference for people who work once the Sun has set because of the dangers they are exposed. She helps taxi drivers, mariachis, bartenders, police officers, soldiers, waitresses, prostitutes, etc. She is the patroness and the defender against assaults, road killings, wounds by firearms, and against all types of violent death. It has been reported that she has prevented the death of devotees involved in road accidents.

You may also ask her for things that you would not dare to ask other saints, for example: the death of your enemy, rival or unfaithful partner; damage to the properties of those who feel envious or resentment, or make that all evil they have sent towards us turns against them. She is considered a righteous entity, since she does not grant whims, but gives everybody what they deserve. Therefore, her devotees are asked to live a righteous life and fulfil the promises they make to the Most Holy.

Chapter 2 Why is the worship of the Holy Death Expanding?

To answer this question you are going to understand me very easily. Almost all of us come from religions that threaten or suggest that things will go wrong if we act or think badly.

At some point in our lives, we have all been angry, we have all screamed or we have all said something in a moment of heat. This is part of human nature.

What difference is there with the cult of the Santisima Muerte (the Most Holy Death), La Nina Bonita (the Pretty Girl), La Flaca (the Skinny), La Flaquita (the Skinny Lady), La Santa Patrona (the Patron Saint), la Catrina?

Well, you can ask for anything and we all, basically, deserve to have the same help without any difference, without judging our past, or what we have done; you must only look forward: it does not matter if you are a peasant or a king.

We all have a common moment in our lives in which we know we must cross the line without the certainty of knowing where we are going.

If all our material possessions were taken away and we were told that we had to go, that the hour of our death had arrived the first thing we would do would be to take care of our loved ones, and we would put everything in order in one way or another. But, what none of us would forget then, is that the most important thing is to have a good death, a peaceful death and with no pain.

Since the Most Holy Death helps and protects everyone she has been wrongly labelled, for a short time, as something negative.

The people who ask and pray to her have found great relief and consolation and that is why her worship and spreading is done through her own devotees, transmitting the cult orally from parents to children.

Chapter 3 The representation of the Holy Death and its forms

The Holy Death may be represented in different ways, as a male or a female figure; as a masculine figure, it is gloomily dressed and has a scythe and a rosary; as a feminine figure, it is dressed in a long white satin robe and has a golden crown.

The Holy Death may also be represented as a skull, a skeleton covered with a robe, sometimes holding a scale -which means equality for all- or with a scythe, as an elderly woman or as a pretty young woman, dressed in white, in black, in red, in yellow, or in other colours, or also as a man in humble clothes.

The most frequent representations are in prints, either in black and white or in colours. They are made of resin, glass, metal, papier-m?ch, wood, bone, etc., and consecrated according to the person who makes them.

The Holy Death sitting

The Holy Death is sitting on a kind of throne watching the world, and is a faithful servant of the Universal Creator. The figure is holding a scythe or a balance (with which the world is balanced between the spiritual and economic side), and is accompanied by an animal that represents the underworld, such as the owl. In the other hand, there is a scythe which represents the mutilation of all negative energy, wherever this figure is placed. For Law Offices, the ideal colour is green.

Sitting on the world

The strength of this figure is in the orb, it is used more as a reference to its strength than as a special form for making requests. It is used with other images. The head tilts upwards indicating that the Holy Death always looks like this at the Creator of all visible and invisible things. This position suggests that the Holy Death will always be His faithful servant and that of all existing things. This figure is always dressed with a robe and is holding a scythe, which symbolizes the tool needed to cut all bad energy that affects the human beings.

Sitting on the floor

This image is used as a symbol of humility and devotion. It is placed on simple altars, but it is as powerful as any other figure.

Standing

This is the most well-known position. It is a whole-body figure covered with a robe from head to toe, with a strip round the waist, and the sleeves of the cloak covering three quarters of the body. The figure is holding the world (which represents that the power of God over all life existing in this world is in its hands), a book, a scythe, a torch or a scale.

This Holy Death transmits strength and majesty, it symbolizes protection and sanctity.

This figure can be found in other Catholic altars, since it is the equivalent to the Christian Virgin.

Wherever this skeletal figure is placed, it is always seen with great respect and spiritual firmness. It has been represented with the great mystical depth of the white colour. The robe represents personal progress, health and prosperity in any aspect.

With open arms

It represents the defence, protection and benevolence of a mother. No matter what social class you belong to, you will always be welcomed into her arms. The Holy Death will help you in any situation, no matter how difficult it may be. The robe is baggier. In one hand there is the world, and in the other, a scythe. This figure may be placed with other images as backup.

With an owl

The owl, that symbolizes the bond with the underground force, protects and stops all evil, it rejects and returns the negative energy.

The owl is an animal that warns you when there is hatred or evil in the environment. It is used in altars for protection and rejection.

The owl is usually between the feet.

The owl is a mystical animal par excellence that feeds at night since it has nightlife.

It is an animal that is always vigilant and watching that no evil energy or curse goes where this figure is placed and is one of the most akin to the Holy Death.

With a hourglass

This figure is usually standing and bent a little forward, dressed in a cloak and holding an hourglass.

It represents the time consumed by each living being, on the earthly plane. In the other hand there is an oil lamp, which represents the spiritual light of each devotee so the Holy Death can guide him or her in any situation no matter how difficult it may be.

From papier-m?ch

These figures have their own energy because they are true works of art. They are hand-made and they are never the same, neither in size, shape or how they are painted or decorated. Papier-m?ch figures are especially unique.

Pious

This form of Holy Death is sitting down, holding or carrying a human being.

This figure is holding the body of a person with one hand and his/her legs with the other. The head is slightly raised and looking forwards and upwards, begging for the Creators clemency for the devotees and for a fair trial; this Holy Death is always wearing a cloak.

If you have this figure, spiritual peace, abundance and harmony are granted.

Chapter 4 Her Symbols

Scythe

The scythe is used to cut off all the negative energies sent by our enemies and free ourselves from any influence or evil sent to us.

Since scythes are also used to till, it symbolizes the harvest of a new hope and brings prosperity. In general, it cuts negative energies and provides security.

The Earth

The Earth represents the physical, economic or material part. It also contains the spiritual images that are concentrated in certain moments of time. It is the representation of the afterlife.

Having the world in the hand of the Holy Death means that you will achieve power in any field, and you will be ensured success in whatever you start. It gives you confidence, security, success, leadership ability, conquest and independence.

Hourglass

It is associated with the god of time in Greek mythology. It is a symbol of investment and the relationships between the afterlife and this world.

It has been linked to the ideas of perpetual movement of magical and divine beings.

The sand governs the time in our lives; we dont have to live fast, but with full awareness of what we do and without looking for problems or complications. It helps us to have patience and to have confidence that all the proposed goals in life will be achieved, without hesitation.

We ask the Holy Death to have the time in our favour for what we need, whether slow or fast.

Owl

The owl is a nocturnal animal, whose sight is very sharp and has an infallible sense of direction. It represents our eyes and feelings. It helps us to move forward, despite being blind and confused by adversity.

We may not see the way out of a problem, but the owl will help us to stay the course in life and in the right direction.

It is also related to wisdom, helping to overcome your cultural expectations to act wisely. It boosts intelligence.

One of its skills is to act as the messenger of the Holy Death; therefore, it is useful for asking favours. In general, it helps to improve our intelligence, knowledge, ideas, creativity and orientation.

Lamp or lantern

It is a symbol of spirituality and intelligence. Light always shows us the right direction, the clarity and the decisions that will be taken in life. We can move forward if there is light.

It also accompanies us in times of darkness, or when we see that everything is a problem. It lifts us from ignorance and leads us to the truth. It makes us search within ourselves and think about the solutions to possible problems, without losing confidence in solving them.

It helps to have spiritual peace, clarity and harmony.

Scales

It is the mystical symbol par excellence of justice (Themis, the goddess of justice also carries a scale), and is of Chaldean origin. It is the balance between punishment and guilt.

The most common form of scale has two hanging plates -both the same size- arranged symmetrically, indicating that justice is impartial.

If the plates are asymmetrical, punishment and self-destructive forces are triggered, since the balance is broken.

It is associated with our balance, and the achievement of inner peace and happiness. In general, it helps us to have stability, peace, strength, security and self-confidence.

Chapter 5 The colours of the Holy Death

The colours of the Holy Deaths cloak or robe have a special meaning. If the robe covers her from head to feet, it symbolises the way we try to hide our true personality, what we show is not what we are.

The cloth that covers the skeleton that represents the Lady is what we, as humans, try to disguise.

Our skin and our face is what we show: its unique and beautiful. But if we dig, we find the bones, the skull, which makes us all equal before the fate that awaits us which is Death.

White, black and red are the colours mostly used, but I hereby describe in detail all the other colours and their meaning.

Gold:

This colour represents economic power, money, success, liquidity. It is ideal for businesses or shops. The cloak should be all gold to enhance these qualities. It opens the roads in the economic aspect.

Bone or natural:

Natural colour helps to maintain peace, harmony and success wherever the figure is placed.

This colour is highly recommended for homes and businesses.

Red:

This colour has been related with love, sex and passion. It helps to maintain harmony with our partner and the people around us.

It represents emotional stability, it is ideal to have harmony in your family and that all the members of your house support each other.

If the figure is standing and has an owl between the feet, it represents everything related to love.

White:

It represents tranquillity and peace, total purification wherever the figure is placed. It helps to cleanse all the negative energy, mainly in homes where jealousies and family grudges abound.

Green:

This colour is associated with justice or legal issues.

It is advisable to have this figure in law firms.

It is very venerated by this group.

Amber:

This colour is used to treat drug addictions and alcoholism. It can be found in rehabilitation centres. The name of the sick person is usually placed under the image of the Most Holy Death and works wonderful and miraculous results with the patient.

Black:

It represents the total protection in our home or business: it avoids the bad influences of any work, negative energy, black magic, palo mayombe, santer?a, voodoo, etc. either against your family or in a business. It unlocks any spiritual damage made against you.

It also helps the person who owns this figure to achieve his/her goals and objectives without anybody bothering or finding out, hiding his/her true intentions in the eyes of potential enemies.

Blue:

It represents wisdom. It is the colour associated with studies and people related to teaching, since it helps to understand better and to explain ideas correctly. It enhances concentration.

Purple:

It represents transmutation; it changes negative energy to positive energy. It is also associated with health at any level, both spiritual and physical. This colour was widely used by shamans and healers. Some spiritual brothers also consider white a symbol of being healthy.

Yellow:

It is related to liquidity, prosperity and economic success, ideal for any type of business. It also implies strength and energy.

Pink:

It is related to love relationships, for finding a partner and for emotional stability. It is also associated with pride, feelings, softening hard hearts and everything related to feminine and friendship.

Silver:

Silver is linked to economic situations, considered as the colour of fortune or abundance it helps to bring money and success. People who spend their time and money gambling seek this colour.

Gamblers may sometimes be seen with a malachite stone or a silver-coloured Holy Death. Silver is also one of the best energy drivers and, when gambling, people always look for good energy for good luck.

Copper or grey:

By nature this colour represents firmness, and it is also related to economic issues.

In addition, it is also frequently used in rituals to disrupt any negative energy that may be in our path. It helps to unblock any economic problem, and to conclude or close any pending business. That is why this colour was included in the Holy Deaths cloak.

Coffee:

It facilitates communication with the supernatural, with the afterlife. It improves concentration and telepathy.

7colours:

The Holy Death usually appears standing, with the position of firmness and security that characterises her, as the great spiritual lady and entity of light that she is.

In one hand, she is holding her faithful and inseparable scythe so feared by some and so sought after by others; feared because it can end the life of every living being and sought because it cuts all the negative energy that is in our path. In her other hand she is holding the world, our home. This represents that she is a faithful servant of the Almighty Creator. You may also find the Holy Death holding a balance, which represents the balance on both the spiritual and the material plane of humans.

This type of figure is used to combine and boost the 7 colours and to carry out special works. The 7 colours are: gold, silver, copper, red, purple, green and blue.

Gold calls abundance, i.e. money. Red is the ideal colour of love and passion, it represents the image of passionate love and family. Purple is the colour of transmutation, it changes negative to positive and the health of the sick. Silver is linked to economic situations: considered as the colour of luck or abundance, it helps to bring money and success. Green represents justice. Copper disrupts all negative energies and blue symbolizes heaven and ocean, immensity and spirituality.

Chapter 6 Altars and their Preparation, offerings

To worship the Holy Death you must prepare an altar. This altar represents the door that communicates with her, that attracts the energy of her kingdom to our world. It is a consecrated space where we place the objects and images that underpin our devotion, and fill us at a spiritual level.

However, I must state that setting up an altar in a country such as Mexico is not the same as preparing it in other countries in Europe or in the rest of the world.

To begin, I will describe how altars are prepared in Mexico from where they originate.

First of all, I recommend you to look for a special place that is spacious and comfortable. If you want to set up a private altar try not to show this place to curious people. It is better to keep it hidden, since its effects will be stronger with people who have faith and worship the Holy Death. Conversely, if it is a family altar, it should be set up in a quiet, well-ventilated room in which people can go to pray.

If possible, the walls of the altar should be black to protect the home, office or business, the ceiling purple, and the area of the altar should be covered with a purple veil in the form of a curtain. Set up the altar facing the wall where the sun sets: that is, oriented towards the west. Place a small table at the bottom of the altar and cover it completely with a black cloth or tablecloth (the cloth should reach the floor and cover all four sides of the table).

As far as possible, use utensils that are of natural origin so that the attraction of energy and light is more powerful.

The tablecloth may be changed depending on the colour needed for the requests; thus boosting the attraction of the right energy for each request.

Once you have the place to put your altar, make a box. This box should be a bit smaller than the altar and made of wood, iron, clay, metal or any other product of plant origin. The Holy Death will be placed on top of this box, at our own height or even at a higher position as a clear manifestation of respect. Line the box with a piece of fabric or velvet, red on the inside and black on the outside-, and add a padlock or a small lock to it. This box will be called the depository. The objects of power that will serve as a guide to the celestial spirits towards the altar will be kept inside this box and the person in charge of the altar will guard its key.

It is recommended to keep in this box the bones of nocturnal animals or in your case- memories of a deceased person, soil from the cemetery, ashes, or soil from archaeological places with great energy from our pre-Hispanic ancestors.

Quartz, magnets and other crystals should also be stored in this box.

When ready, wrap all these things up in a purple cloth preferably-, and tie them with a thin black or purple ribbon. Then, put this package inside the depository and cover it with a black cloth.

Finally, place the Most Holy Death on top of the box and put candles on each side, together with the flowers and the incense. It is suggested to also put a clay plate, an ashtray and a crystal glass, which are the exclusive utensils of the Most Holy Death.

Tuesday is the most auspicious day to put up and consecrate this altar. It is perfect to do this in the mornings since the Holy Death has just woken up, she is very strong and has an entrepreneurial energy, and she loves challenges; in the evenings, she is in the fullness of her power, and at nights, the energy of the hidden forces manifest. To set up the altar, the person must be calmed and relaxed, without haste or worries because he or she must dedicate himself or herself in body and soul to the Holy Death.

As for the image of the Most Holy, you may choose any figure you like. They are usually made of clay, resin, fibreglass or papier-m?ch with the different symbols that I mentioned before.

You must decide whether you want a full-body image, an image sitting down, or on a throne, etc. and also which colour you want depending on your spiritual needs. You can also put several saints, dedicated to special works and can place them with their own offerings. It is preferable that you choose an image that gives you confidence, faith and devotion.

You can also choose a printed image or a picture of the Holy Death, if you have no space. You should also choose the one that inspires you the most, and gives you confidence, faith and devotion. The way the Holy Death is represented does not matter, since she is in all her different forms.

The advantage of choosing a picture or an image is that you can carry it around, and take it and put it anywhere.

To continue the altar must be consecrated.

This must be done by someone who knows and manages energies in the mortuary theme, and everybody should choose the person they trust the most. However, if it is your own altar and you do it yourself, you can ask for it with a lot of faith, since you will be the one who will attend it and worship it. For this, you will have to clean yourself first and then clean the altar. Before doing any ritual, it is very important that you do this: you must wash yourself and purify your body, soul and spirit. You must take a hot bath to open the pores to help you to receive the energies you are about to generate.

Then, you have to dress in white and while you are getting dressed you must pray:

Oh! Lord, forgive me I beseech you,

I have had mistakes, but I regret,

I ask for your forgiveness, for all the evils

that I have consciously and unconsciously caused,

I offer you good behaviour,

since the forces that I invoke are in good faith

and I do not intend to do any harm,

but I do it because I think

in the happiness of this person and mine,

if You decide otherwise, I accept it.

Pray 3 Lords Prayers and 3 Hail Marys.

Cleansing Ritual

This must be done before doing any other ritual, since the environment must be clean from energies to invoke the Holy Death.

Ingredients:

1 mortar to mix everything

1 white candle

cleaning mix (as a granular mixture): one part of incense, one part of myrrh, one part of rue, one part of lavender, a pinch of chilli powder

1 censer to put the mixture

1 glass with salt and water

To begin with, you must wash yourself as I said before, because it is essential that the environment is clean and cleanliness is done on the physical plane.

Use the mortar to mix the cleaning mixture, enough to perfume and purify the environment you want to clean. When you are ready to start, light the candle and relax, visualise the negative energy leaving your body and see how you are washing yourself. Let the candle burn to the end and throw what is left (even if it has not been completely burnt out).

It is important that when you have finished cleaning yourself in the inside, you visualise that all this negative energy burns and disappears.

Bless the water, salt and incense (you may also use holy water), and add a pinch of salt to the water. Then, go around the corners of all the rooms in the house with the censer. Stop at every corner and let some smoke out. Visualise a light that expands and starts to wrap the whole house.

Stop at each door and each window, doing the same thing and saying the following: I bless this (door, window, room, house).

When you finish, take the glass with salt and water and walk around the house making a cross with the glass on all the walls of the house. Finally, go back to the place where you want to put the altar and mentally check if there was any place or dark space in which there could be negativity or you noticed it somewhere.

Cleansing the Altar

To carry out the spiritual cleansing you must do a rite and a petition to the Most Holy Death. These are the ingredients you need:

Ingredients:

incense (any you like)

liquors: spirits, mescal, tequila etc.

3 white candles

flowers and vases

1 cigarette or cigar

wooden matches

Use any flowers you can buy: if possible, it is better that someone gives them to you or that you cut them from your own flowerpots.

First, take a sip of the drink you have chosen. Then, take another sip and spray the drink that is in your mouth all over your site of worship. It is important that you only spread the contents of one sip, and make sure that the altar is in a well-ventilated place and without any flame lit to avoid accidents. Then, pray 3 Lords Prayers and 3 Hail Marys.

Fill the glass of the Holy Death with the drink. Then, light the cigarette or cigar with a wooden match and blow the smoke of the cigar on the altar and the image. You must do this nine times and then say the following prayer:

In the name of the Father,

the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

immaculate being of divine light,

I beg you to grant me the favours I ask,

until the last day, hour and moment

in which your Divine Majesty

commands to take me

before your presence.

Death dear to my heart,

do not forsake me of your protection.

So be it.

While praying, light the candles and the incense, and put the flowers in the vases. It takes 9 weeks to enshrine the altar; every Friday from the first Friday, you will say nine times this prayer or novena, with the candles lit and the incense burning, and changing the flowers when they begin to wilt because they must always look good.

The prayer for the enshrinement must not be interrupted, but if for any reason this happens, you must start again from the beginning; this might be a sign that you are not ready yet, or convinced to start the worship and handle such powerful energies.

In order to begin, the altar must be set up in this order: first the altar, and then the prayer to the Most Holy and some Lords Prayers. Once the tablecloth is placed, light a white candle dedicated to the Holy Death and pray again. Light the candle with your right hand. Once the candle is lit, place the image you have chosen on the altar. The image must have been washed one day before and left to dry in the open on the previous afternoon. To enhance her power, you may impregnate the image with the perfume you use. It is important not to do all this in front of people who are not from the house, so they do not disturb the Holy Deaths energies.

It is advised to cleanse the altar every 9, 18 or 27 days. If you miss the date, you can cleanse it on a Tuesday, preferably at noon; never in the early morning, afternoon or evening, or when there is bad weather.

Wash the tablecloth, the plates, glasses, incense-burners and other elements. Except the tablecloth, the objects are cleaned with a damp cloth or are shaken, but they are never washed because the essence of the offerings must be preserved. These objects are cleaned and then put back in their place. All the good and bad energy of the altar goes to the tablecloth; and that is why you must wash it to keep it always pure.

If you do a job for another person, all the objects must be thrown once the worship has been finished. The objects cannot be left on the altar unless the work is for you or for a close relative.

Offerings must be thrown away; you must not drink, eat or smoke them. In theory, their essence has been lost because the Holy Death has taken it.

You must throw away the withered flowers and water, because they absorb the bad energy of the environment. The candles, when burnt out, must be thrown away, especially those that are special offerings.

The Holy Death is asked for special favours in times of need: she protects you and your family. To get good results, personal rituals must be done with a lot of faith, devotion and confidence in what you are doing. It must be something necessary or considered fair. Everything has a price and satisfying a whim can be very expensive.

Do not be in a hurry, it is important to devote as much time as necessary to do the rituals, look for hours. You must also be in the best possible physical conditions and take care that your health is optimal at the time of doing the rituals, including not being sleepy, drunk or drugged.

If another person asks you for a petition, remember that you will need twice as much faith, devotion and confidence in doing the ritual. To help others you need to have the vocation and the gift to do so, there are people who were born for it. You should not do it for money, or for any personal interest.

You cannot do two rituals at the same time. If you work with a single energy you will get better results.

You must fulfil all the promises you make to the Holy Death. Wash your hands before and after doing a ritual. If you do not know the prayers, you can read them.

Another Ritual of Consecration

This is another way to consecrate your image so that the entity enters it as many times as you need. It is more effective if you do it on a Saturday.

Ingredients:

liquid of rose

liquid of rue

petals of red roses or red carnations

incense and myrrh (in grain)

1 censer

natural water

1 bucket to wash the Holy Death

bee honey

1 spoon

Procedure:

Put the natural water and the liquids of rose and rue in the bucket. Add the petals and a little honey. Mix everything with a wooden spoon and wash the image. Light the candles on the altar to welcome the image. Light the incense with the mixture of myrrh. Immerse the image in the bucket and ask her to come and enter the image while saying:

Holy Death,

I am calling you

to come to this place

and take this image that I bless

in the name of the Father,

the Son and the Holy Spirit.

So be it.

When you finish, place the image on the altar that should be already prepared.

6.1. Offerings

Wines and Liquors

Wines and liquors are essential because the Holy Death loves alcoholic beverages and the stronger the more she likes them, and it is an ancient and traditional offering. The offering of wines and liquors will depend on how much each person can spend to buy them. The most important thing is to offer them with a lot of love and faith. Wines and liquors should be served in glasses or glass goblets and changed when they are cloudy, mouldy or have dust.

The wines and liquors that she prefers are those with a high alcoholic content, such as: spirits, tequila, rum, mescal and beer. They should be served in a glass or glass goblet.

Cigars and Cigarettes

Our Holy Death likes them very much. It is recommended that you keep the cigar unlit during the first day and you light it during the second day. Cigars are used in many special rituals or when you profess an African-origin religion such as Santeria or Palo Mayombe. It is better to used them as leaf tobacco since it contains less harmful substances.

Once the cigar is lit, you should place it next to the Holy Death. This will help to ward off envy around your work, business or family. If it is a cigar, smoke it and exhale the smoke to purify the altar and remove all negative energy. This can be done as often as you think is convenient.

Flowers

Flowers are frequent offerings and any flowers can be used as long as they are offered with faith. The Holy Death likes roses, carnations, tuberoses, gardenias, tulips The important thing is that they are fresh, and the most recommended are the flowers from the fields because they are pure. Roses are the most commonly used. White flowers are used to attract health and to prevent spiritual and physical illnesses. Red flowers are related to love, emotions, spiritual stability, passion and desire. It is important to remove the flowers when they start to wither, because they capture all the surrounding negative energy and we do not want this energy to remain. If you need to get money and work, good economy, the flowers should be yellow.

In general, white flowers were usually offered to the Holy Death.

Incenses

One or two incenses can be burned per week. The symbolism of incenses is related to the purification of the air and people. Their use in religious and spiritual rituals is very old, since they have been used in all cultures.

You can use the incense you want depending on what you need:

Copal: transforms the negative energy that exists in your home or business, it acts as a Road-Opener for businesses. Once the incense is lit, it is recommended to open the doors and windows to allow ventilation and the entry of new energies.

Sandalwood: related to economic prosperity and abundance, liquidity and success in what you have asked.

Myrrh: it cuts jealousy, troubles, gossip and hatred. If you burn two incense sticks or cones next to our Holy Death, the requests are obtained more quickly.

Roses: it is, par excellence, the smell of love. It is used in any ritual of love since it attracts it. It is aphrodisiac; it awakens the passion and sexual drive towards the couple. If you place three cones or sticks it promotes the arrival of a love.

Musk: related to good health, both physical and mental. It prevents diseases at your house.

Jasmine: to attract sales in business.

Carnation, vanilla and lilac: for emotional and loving affairs, to attract harmony in relationships.

The first incense that was used in worships was copal incense during pre-Hispanic times and it was used by the different cultures populating our country. The use of incense on our altar is a synonym of respect to ancient traditions. It is recommended to use an incense-burner of natural origin such as: clay, stone, wood, etc.

4 Elements

The 4 elements are essential offerings on an altar to the Most Holy Death, since they are important to channel our requests. Fire is represented by candles. Water is essential: aglass of fresh water for our Holy Death is sufficient. Earth is found in our offerings in flowers, fruits, etc. Air is also represented with candles and with our prayers.

Water

Water is essential and must never be missing on your altar, because it is necessary in the physical and in the spiritual worlds since it helps to channel the energy. Always use clear, clean water (either form the tap or purified), and put it in glasses or glass goblets. Do not fill the glass or goblet to the brim and keep it on the altar for at least 15 days or a little less if the water gets dirty, or becomes dark.

If bubbles come out of the glass, it means that there will be economic tranquillity or that your projects will be carried out without problems. If the water stays the same as the first day, it means that there is good energy and your requested favours will be granted.

It is very important that the first time you set up the altar, you look at the water. If the water has small bubbles or it is crystal-clear in the morning, it means that the Holy Death is happy with the altar you have prepared: spiritual and economic tranquillity. However, if it is murky, mouldy or with cream, it means that she is very upset with your request and have a lot of difficulties to achieve what you have asked.

Bread

Bread is the sacred food that must never be missing on the altar, since it symbolises that you will never go hungry or lack food. Put a piece of bread or bun next to your Holy Death. It can be wholemeal bread, if you prefer. Change it frequently, at least twice a week. Never throw it away in the rubbish, put it under a tree, the leafier the better.

Instead of bread, some people put a cake: it depends on your own choice.

Fruits

The fruits offered should always be fresh. Red apples are the most used, usually 3 or 4. Yellow apples are used in some rituals related to money. Fruit offerings are good to avoid envy and bad energies. They should not be eaten before they get spoiled and should not be thrown away in the rubbish.

There are believers who offer seasonal fruits. Some fruits are also used in love-related works.

Sweets

Chocolate is considered to be an emotional stimulant and that is why a bar of chocolate is placed on the altar of the Holy Death. Chocolate will help to eliminate negative energies and envy. It is also used for love-related works.

Honey is also used for sentimental works and should be included on the altar. You can put any type of sweets, regardless of the amount. It is preferable that they are homemade, but the important thing is that they are offered from the bottom of your heart.

Money

If the altar is in your business, offer the Holy Death the first sale of the day. You can leave money on the altar until you close or during the first 21 days of the opening of your business. Money is used in several rituals to improve the personal or family economy, and when you need to look for a new or a better job.

Fragances

Scents are also important. Their use is recommended because they serve to customise the altars. It is recommended to use some of your own fragrance on the image of the Holy Death.

Plants and Herbs

Camphor: for absent persons, write their full name on a piece of paper and put it under the image. The person will soon return to you.

Basil: used for economic well-being. There should always be some basil on the altars that ask for success and abundance.

Rude: it removes bad vibrations, lies, deceits, gossip, and provides marital union.

Rosemary: for good luck, it takes away negativity and evil thoughts.

Peppermint: it helps to solve love-related troubles.

Union Grass: to attract the opposite sex and make easy love conquests.

Come to Me: to increase the love of the couple.

Costmary: to obtain power and luck in love.

Stones

White quartz: to ward off bad thoughts, it provides positive energy.

Pink quartz: to give great power and strength in love.

7 metals: to attract abundance, money and prosperity.

Magnet stone: it has a great power for business and trade, used to make charms.

Alum stone: to solve legal problems and justice.

Jet stone: to attract fortune and make the money work.

Candles

Fire is one of the four main elements in any request or ritual. It represents a bridge between this world and the afterlife; but it is also a source of power and destruction.

When you light a candle, a call is made to the forces of nature: fire, air, water and earth. The earth is the wax, which is transformed into air.

When you light a candle, ask with devotion and faith, always visualising what you want to achieve, transmitting devotion and respect. Try to use strong colours and not pastel ones. It is better to light the candles with wooden matches and with the right hand if you are right-handed, or with your left hand if you are left-handed; since it is the hand we use the most and it will help us to have more strength.

You must let the candle burn completely, but if for any reason you must blow it out before it burns, its better do to it with wet fingers or with something metallic; never blowing it out, because it is another air element and that would dissipate the energy.

Look for candles of good quality, preferably made of paraffin wax and choose the colour in accordance with your needs. The colours mostly used are:

White: To achieve peace and tranquillity, protection in your home, business or personal protection. This colours is also used in rituals of consecration (such as in the Holy Eucharist in Catholicism), purification, meditation, fortune telling, spells that imply healing, spiritual strength, clairvoyance, mediumship, to attract ancestors, etc.

Yellow: To ask for money, liquidity, prosperity, work and any economic request in our lives, for wisdom and good luck.

Orange: To ask for strength, and to attack and defend ourselves from the enemy.

Pink: For sentimental requests of love, to draw hard hearts near, for friendship, or for any other ritual that implies femininity.

Red: It represents strength and passion, for any request related with love, emotions, sex, passion or desire, to ask for the couple or marriage, and to achieve emotional stability.

Golden: To open the roads in business and to get money, liquidity and economic stability, to be successful and to increase sales and economic benefits, for businessmen and merchants.

Purple: For everything related to health, to be healthy and to reject illnesses.

Blue: To ask for concentration in studies and mental strength, for any student, to boost intelligence, to solve professional problems at home, to soften the hearts of our superiors.

Green: For legal problems, used amongst lawyers and people related to justice to achieve success.

Coffee: To communicate with the afterlife, enhance clairvoyance, mediumship, concentration and telepathy, to overcome any obstacle in our daily life.

Indigo: To be able to sleep, heal and increase our spirituality.

Black: To return any negative energy sent to us, to have strength and power, for total protection, for annoying neighbours. It also helps to achieve the persons goals and objectives without anyone bothering or finding out, it hides our true intentions in the eyes of potential enemies.

Interpretation of the Flames of the Candles

If the candle goes out on its own and for no apparent reason: This indicates that one part of the request will be granted, but for the other you will have to do your part with will and sacrifice to achieve what you have asked for.

If the candle keeps going out: it may be that the wick is too short or is misplaced: if this is the case, blow out the candle, let it cool down and replace it. If it continues to go out, this means that people envy you for all the things you do or have and your friends or people around you look at you with suspicion. Allow the candle to cool for a few minutes, pass it all over your body -starting with head and ending with the feet-, and light the candle again while saying a prayer.

If you have asked for something related with love or sentimental matters, it means that your request will not be concluded. You should pass the candle all over your body again, as I have described before.

If you have asked for money, you will have to be careful not to trust or lend money, because you will lose it and the person you lent it to will also lose it.

If the tip of the flame is bright, it is a very good sign that you will achieve your request and you will be lucky.

If the flame is small, it indicates that you will have to have a lot of patience for getting results because they will be slow and difficult. If it is a request for love, it means that there will be a disappointment with the couple or family. If it is related with money, the people around will make that your request is not achieved.

If the flame is normal, it does not move and its size is normal, it indicates that your request will be granted without problems. For this, you have to look at the candle for 3 minutes to make sure that the flame does not change.

To be considered normal, the flame should be blue and yellow. If you asked for something related with love, it means that you will soon come to terms with your partner, or someone close to you will get married. If it is related with the economy, it augurs prosperity or a job promotion; you will achieve any money request. When you achieve the requests you should thank the Holy Death.

If the flame is oscillating, it indicates changes in your request and that the result is not as expected. If it is for love, it means that the couple is unsure and that is not good. Also, that either you or your partner is influenced by other people and by negative comments that could lead you to break. If it is for a family issue, it means that you should not take your family problems to work or the other way around. If it is for money, you will have problems in your workplace or your job position may change.

If it is oscillating a lot, you must have more faith in what you ask, have no doubt on your own spiritual and personal capacity and be more consistent in what you propose.

If the flame looks like a spiral, it indicates that you will get good news and your request has been heard.

If the flame oscillates to the right, it indicates affirmation to your question, the answer is yes, the events are positive and it is a good omen for economic issues, love, work, etc.

If the flame oscillates to the left, it indicates denial to your question, the answer is no, it is not good for executing ideas, but yes for having or forming them.

If the flame does not move, it indicates little action, stability and stagnation, in love it is related with peace.

If the flame sizzles or sparks, it indicates some type of obstacle before achieving your request.

If the flame goes up and down, it indicates confusion of ideas, that several requests are mixed, scattered mind.

If several tears of wax combine forming a larger one, it indicates that you will have to solve a difficult situation because it is imposed, you will have a lot of doubts and you will not find the solution, it is good that you rectify your ideas and behaviour.

If the tear falls to the right, it indicates that the solution to the problem is fast. Expect positive changes and everything will be solved.

If the tear falls to the left, it indicates slowness in the solution of the problem or request, it will take some time to resolve, or there will be fights or disputes, mistrust and insecurity, there are no changes, everything will remain the same.

If the tear changes direction, it indicates that there are doubts in achieving what you have asked for yourself or for others, you will go through a problematic stage or emotional crisis, it is better to be cautious.

If the candle tears a lot, it is a bad omen. It will take at least 12 months for your request to be fulfilled. At present, there a lot of obstacles to achieve your request.

If the candle ends clean, it indicates that you will get what you ask for. It is a good omen for everything and also for spiritual issues.

If the candle is broken, it indicates a bad spell, a betrayal, an illness. This is also the case if the glass where the candle is breaks or crashes.
